LIFE // VERSE

During my Bible study today, I came across what I do believe is my verse for the next year... possibly even what some might call their "life verse."

Truth be told, I am imperfect. Way, way, way imperfect. Since my teenage years, I have been in a perpetual cycle of inconsistency. Part of the reason I haven't remained in the same state [of mind, heart, dreams] is due to the growth of my business. If only I could peel back the curtain and show you how absolutely blown away I am by the growth this year has delivered. There is still a long way to go, but I am learning everyday; I have made deadlines, missed deadlines, designed and re-designed, organized workflow and cleaned it up after the chaos of mass volume destroyed what was once a "routine".

That being said, I'm coming to the realization that one of my greatest faults is my desire for an absolute end. I want to be a worship leader, period. I want to be a photographer, period. I want to move, period. I want to stay in Georgia, period. I have made so made "definite" decisions, discovering months later that I truly missed the mark. I have identity issues. Growing up, I just knew that I knew that I knew that I was supposed to be a worship leader. In my little teenage, Hillsong-loving mind, that meant till death do us part. I would lead worship from the age of 15 to the age of 80 (God help that congregation). About two years after I graduated high school (2009), photography offers started--for all practical purposes--falling into my lap. Honestly, my skills weren't too hot, either--but I had people asking me to take family pictures, senior pictures, wedding pictures left-and-right. My cute little hobby was avalanching into a full-blown business. By September of last year (2010), I was able to quit my job as a Starbucks barista; and by May of this year (2011), I was able to register my business as an LLC. At this point, I was shooting weddings nearly every weekend, leading worship on Sunday mornings, and feeling quite confused as to how this all worked together. Did God change His mind about my calling? Am I straying from what I'm called to do by pursuing a career in photography? Can I do both? Is this just for a season? How do I plan for an indefinite season of photography when I have to invest $12,000 in equipment and I'm booking brides two years out? Where will full-time ministry come into play? Did I hear God wrong?  It's amazing to me how I can still complicate things in a season where so much is going right... and then some. I'd always defined myself as a worship leader, but now the reflection of my time and efforts seemed to establish my identity as a photographer.

Feeling the pressure of being spread too thin, in addition to my [faulty] desire of wanting a distinct identity, I stepped down from leading worship every Sunday. It made complete sense at the time. I would shoot up to 12 hours on a Saturday, get home at 1:00 a.m. and wake up at 5:00 a.m. to prepare for worship that morning. By the time second service came around, I was emotionally drained. I could hardly keep my eyes open during the sermon--something I rarely struggle with. In addition, I was struggling to plan set lists on time--really feeling like I was cheating out the team I was leading of the affection and attention that is necessary in ministry. Something had to give, and I was so passionate about the growth of my photography business, that I felt like perhaps God was changing my heart.

Since May, God has shown me way too much about myself. I am not constant. My emotions are so incredibly involved in my decision-making skills. I define myself too often by what I do. More than anything, He has shown me that He is my source.

Amidst the workload and attention, I have all-too-often drifted away from time with Him. I feel my desires changing: desires for wealth, desires to be popular, desires to be comfortable. This just isn't me. These weren't struggles I had before. I was content with my barista income, small apartment with my hubby, and friends at work and church. At the same time, I wasn't comfortable--I had dreams of changing the world around me, getting out of my "comfort zone" and reaching out to those in need, and leading the revolution that God was birthing in my heart; a revolution of humility--of considering others as more significant than myself.

I know I have the tendency to beat myself up more than others. But God and I were the only ones who truly knew where my heart was... and Him more than me.

I still want to lead worship. I want to be used in full-time ministry. And I feel like He has indeed birthed those dreams in me.

But here I am with a booming photography business--all because of His grace and goodness.

What I need is wisdom. Wisdom to trust Him when seasons change. Wisdom to identify myself ever, only in His arms. I still want to be used by Him to change the world--to bring hope, truth, restoration. I want to lead this generation in a revolution of humility, as Christ has led me.

When I came across this verse, I identified with it two-fold. One, I recognized that the wisdom I long for must be pure--not to benefit this identity complex of mine, or to gain some kind of upper-hand in life's journey--it must simply be a longing to know Him more and to be led by Him. Secondly, I recognized far too many qualities that I do not attain--knowing that He is my source. I can only attain such qualities by His grace towards me--His work in and through me.

I know sometimes I can open up too much, but I truly just want everyone to know my heart--if anything to know that you're not alone. We all go through "stuff". But God is faithful.

So, here is my prayer--the work that I pray He does in me over the next, well, however long it takes.

And my heart's prayer in a song:

NEW THINGS

After an incredibly inspirational morning, I decided to make some adjustments to my blog.

First, there's a new page! Sitting right next to the "home" tab is a sweet treat called "Be Inspired." If you have time to waste, or are itching for some inspiration, I've listed some of my absolute favorite sites here.

In addition, I've made some slight design changes to my blog. A while back, I had to change the face of my design completely, and fell in love with this crisp, clean font. Before this design surge, I had a pretty hand-written, cursive font. Truth be told, I'm more of a artsy-crafty, hand-written kind-of-girl, but I love a good sophisticated font, too. I came across a new font this morning that merged the two together perfectly. Excited that I found the right fit, I revamped everything applicable!

I'd love to add some flowery goodness to my design at some point--but for now, it's short and sweet and to-the-point.

I'll have some new posts coming soon! In the meantime, check out one of my new favorite songs:

LIFE // I AM SILLY

Truthfully, I am.

I declared a few weeks ago that I am getting off of facebook until January.

My session this weekend was by far one of the best things that has ever happened to me. (So, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm excited, ya know?) Yesterday afternoon, I got an e-mail from facebook (temptation established) that I was tagged in several posts... about the session... that may or may not have changed my life (temptation successful). I just had to be a part of the conversation! I dreamed this thing up!

So, silly me, I go and comment away, feeling the necessity to now declare to everyone on facebook that I am "back".

My husband left a comment on my status that said

"you punked out."

I hate when he's right.

i sure did. i punked out. i'm human. i love people, okay?

Last night he gave me a motivational speech that had enough "umpth" to propel me into starting a non-profit or something.

My husband believes in me. :)

So, after staring in the mirror for a while (figuratively), I realized I really have an issue with letting things go... facebook, in particular. so lame of me. So, it's officially deactivated. Perhaps never to be opened again... or maybe I will... but not for a while.

In celebration of sticking to your guns, I decided I would do a little "about me". Since you're no longer privy to reading my 10 updates a day via facebook statuses, maybe we can really get to know each other.

Saw another photographer do this, thought I would too.

I’m happiest when… I'm sleeping in with my hubby.
The best place to be in the summer… Lake Michigan
I could spend the whole day… reading at a coffee shop... I do it about once a month, actually.
I always wanted to be…a worship leader. And I get the opportunity frequently at my church... I love my church.
Favorite thing about my house… my workspace. It's a fabulous little corner-of-getaway for me.
For inspiration I… pin, go for a walk/run, or visit Anthropologie.
It’s worth the splurge… my cameras, macbook pro, and lattes.
Words I live by… Proverbs 3:1-12
Day I’d love to live again… my wedding day. I just want to see all of those wonderful people again!
Brings out the best in me… Jesus, the hubby, Will Reagan & United Pursuit, Brooke Fraser, my incredible family, close friends, candles <-- (best. candle. ever.), fresh flowers.

I love you all. Thank you for your grace towards my humanity! I will reiterate... let's get coffee--anytime!

LIFE // WITHOUT FACEBOOK

Hello, friends.

Like many of you, I'm sure, I've been in a self-control battle with facebook for quite some time now. I recently touched on it in a personal post, here.

Sometimes I believe God didn't intend for me to keep in touch with 1600 people. In fact, I can say with confidence that I'm sure of this. It becomes overwhelming to keep up with so many lives, comments, likes, etc.

In addition, a small current of pride started trickling into my heart--and I hated it from the moment I saw it. I don't like my consistent eagerness for attention, often through the medium of "likes" and comments. I began feeling like the response I received from facebook was a direct measurement of my worth--as a photographer, friend, family member.

While I understand that facebook is a wonderful tool to keep in touch with people, to express yourself, and to promote your business, I began to see more "cons" than "pros". As pathetic as it sounds--you really don't know how disgraceful it is to admit it--I was addicted to an hour-by-hour (or even more frequent) check-up on facebook responses. Which leads me to my final point:

Life cannot be lived fully this way.

I am a living, breathing, MOVING being with the capability to interact with people face-to-face... with the brain capacity to stick to a task without trailing off for more than 10 minutes... with the passion and (I say this with all humility) talent to succeed in the pursuit of my dreams without having to succumb to the requests of thousands of people who, for the most part, are not directly contributing to those dreams.

I am so ready to be more efficient with my time. I am ready to spend more of my days outdoors and away from the computer. I am ready to enjoy the relationships with my loved ones through one-on-one conversation, whether in person (whoda' thunk it?) or on the phone.

Life is full--and I refuse to cheat myself out of its splendor.

LIFE // HEALTH

Photo and Design Copyright Haley Sheffield 2011

It's been quite some time since I got personal with my posts. Again, the main reason I choose a blog as the predominate website for my company is to keep a close connection with my clients--I want you to know me, trust me, and walk with me as I grow in my passion.

I don't really know how to beat around the bush. I have gained 40 lbs since high school.
Nuts.

I've been on an emotional roller coaster with my weight since I stared the scale in the face. The truth was hard to swallow. Difficult to understand. Even more difficult to fight. Being honest with myself about my weight opened the door for honesty in other areas of my life. I was busy and stressed all the time. I was consumed with my work (and Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.). I felt distant from God, disconnected from His Word. I wasn't enjoying my time away from my work--time with family and friends--because I couldn't get my mind off of it. I loved my work so much, it became a higher priority in my life than the ones I loved. All of this inward reflection made me feel awful. However, one day I thought to myself:

"My story's not over, though."

Once I realized this, I began--with much frustration--to take steps towards my health. It hasn't been easy, and to be honest, it's only the beginning.

I wanted to write this post to announce a few things (expounding upon the decisions, of course!):

1. Tuesdays are my new Rest Day
I tell you the truth, for months I would roll over in the morning, turn off the alarm on my Blackberry and begin checking my e-mail in bed. The day would then unfold in a chaos of frequently interrupted work, a continual stress of what I needed to get done, and hurried breaks to try and make up for time being lost. This got old. Burdensome. Out of hand. I was compulsively checking my blog, twitter, pinterest, RSS feeds, e-mail, facebook, voicemail. I couldn't seem to keep up. I needed rest.

2. Mornings are for Running and Reading
I know, many of you with full time jobs are rolling your eyes at this point. I always told myself that if I owned my own business--managed my own schedule--I would do two things:

(a) Exercise every day
(b) Read my Bible and another piece of literature every day

I quit my job as a barista at Starbucks last September. I have been in control of my schedule since then... and my schedule has been out of control since then. I hadn't begun to even attempt either of my goals. That changed 6 weeks ago. Yep. This week marks my SIXTH week of running with my Nike+ Sportsband coaching me along the way. This is the first time IN MY LIFE that I have stuck with an exercise routine for more than a few weeks. I am so excited. Reading has been a larger obstacle. It seems that as soon as I get to a quiet place, my brain starts racing with everything I have to do. I hate it. Immersing myself in the peace that the Word brings truly is at the core of my heart--I long to know my Maker more and more.

What would you do with your schedule at your disposal?

3. I am booking less [on purpose]
Hands-down, it is my heart to offer my clients the very best:

(a) Service
(b) Communication
(c) Quality
(d) Product

Fall of 2010 and Spring of 2011 were killer for me. I shot an average of 7 sessions a week. I was having a blast, but living off of adrenaline and suppressing a current of stress on a minute-by-minute basis. When people would ask me the common greeting of "Hey! How are you doing?!?" My response, for a year, has 99% of the time been "Busy, but good." I began to be defined by the stress. My close friends started their invites with "You're probably busy, but..." I was known for being BUSY. Not peaceful, kind, uplifting (those of which I truly hope I am!), but busy. Since Fall of last year, I have not experienced the feeling of not having any work to complete. My goal is to experience that feeling, even if for a day, by Thanksgiving. By the end of this year, I hope to cut my turn-around time in half, offering my clients a shorter wait until they get their pictures.
Saying "no" is by far the most difficult word to come out of my mouth. I love people. I want to take everyone's picture. However, for my health, and the quality of my work, I have to begin to book a manageable amount of sessions/weddings.

4. I am [in the process of] being more Efficient with my Time
The constant spiral of Facebook and Pinterest must come to a stop. I know I'm not alone in this. You get on Facebook for one thing: update status, look up someone's name, check out a new artist. An hour later, you wonder "What in the world have I done with my time?" Same with Pinterest. The site is wonderful, inspiring, helpful, and--well--addicting. It's moments like these that steal the best of me. Steal my creativity, my proficiency and efficiency, my energy... and, one of my most valuable resources, my time. It's as hard as breaking an addiction--but I am on the way to lessening my web-wasting-time. Matter of fact, before the end of the year I will probably take a month off of Facebook/Twitter just to break this awful habit.

Clients: I love you. You are the reason I love my job so much. God has truly blessed me, week after week, to meet and capture some incredible people. I pray your experience has been nothing but good! I cannot wait to continue on this journey with you all--offering you my very best and growing more and more along the way!

I wish the very best to each of you. Stay healthy: heart and soul. Life is so rich.

I set my goals pretty high at the first of the year, and told myself that I would do what it takes to be featured on the blog. On one hand, the experience of visiting their site and seeing MY work (eek!) is absolutely surreal; And on the other hand, I wish I could pull back the curtain of "photography magic" and show you just how much hard work it has taken to get to this place.

I pray this is the first of many, many dreams fulfilled as I continue on this creative adventure. My heart is overflowing with gratitude and excitement!

In celebration of this landmark for me, I am offering TWO

LIFE // UNEXPECTED E-MAILS

So, upon returning home from a FABULOUS wedding today, I received this e-mail.

Upon reading this e-mail, I cried and cried at just how good God is to me. I truly love my job so much. I love my clients. I love the beautiful gift of marriage that God has given us.

And, seriously, friends, all of the credit goes to Him. What is photography without light? No sunsets, summers, or foliage at that. And God is love. I wouldn't have a job if it weren't for love. I simply, humbly, and with great joy embrace every opportunity to capture the indescribable creation He has made.

That is my heart.

So, here's the e-mail (although I've kept it anonymous)... totally out-of-the-blue and unexpected. What an awesome ending to such a great day. If you read this, sir, thank you so much for the encouragement. I certainly treasure your kind words.

Hello Young Lady,

As an old Marine and engineer I have never been much a “touchy feely photo kind of guy”, but many of the photos I see on your web site certainly appear to be of the same quality I see in magazines and in the professional studios here in Washington DC.  Likewise, my daughter [So and so] seems to be exceptionally pleased with your engagement photos.

Some of the shots you have posted on your web site (of all the people) are truly “eye catching” and exceptional ….

Quality products like these should assure you will continue to do very well and grow your business.  Thanks for the fine effort and best of luck in your growing business.

PORTRAITS // MY BEAUTIFUL GRANDMOTHER

Over the past five years or so, I have developed the most incredible relationships with both my Mother and my Grandmother. It's definitely inexplicable, but there's such a treasure in becoming friends with the women you've admired all your life. The admiration and respect are still there, of course, but the long talks, moments of laughter and mutual words of encouragement are a whole new level of connection with the women I love. I would say that my Mother and Grandmother are my biggest fans (along with my husband, and many other family members that I am so blessed to have in my life).

For the past few winters, my Grandmother has visited (from Michigan) for a few months--times I have come to treasure, and utterly enjoy. This year during her visit, she asked me about potentially doing a session with her, and I was so incredibly excited! It is an honor to capture such an amazing woman. God is so rich in His blessings towards me.

Here are some of my favorites from my session with "Grandma Maggie".

Enjoy, friends. ♥

I love you so much, Grandma.

LIFE // BAHAMAS

Needless to say, life has been a little nuts lately. This is ABSOLUTELY the busiest I have ever been, and I am learning day-by-day how to manage the new influx of work.

I have 25+ weddings this year, and am falling in love with my job more and more everyday.

"Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights." -James 1:17

. . .

To be completely honest, I am overflowing with a plethora of feelings. Gratitude, anxiousness, caution, joy, humility, excitement. My husband could tell you how utterly excited I get with every inquiring client. No matter the circumstance, I always see an opportunity to bless someone with all of my heart. 99% of the time, I am blessed in return: a new friend, a word of encouragement, a recommendation, an incredible experience. The Lord has also given me so many opportunities to just GIVE to people -- to capture memories they will treasure for a lifetime, to change the way they think about professional business services, to reveal to them how beautiful they are, to display (through pictures) the love between family and friends, parents and children, husbands and wives. He fuels my passion, provides the opportunity, and supplies me with all that I need to continue on this journey.

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might..." -Ecclesiastes 9:10

. . .

Some friends of ours blessed Justin and I, and I mean BLESSED us, with a cruise to the Bahamas. Neither of us have ever been on a cruise, and we decided it was the perfect way to celebrate our two year anniversary. (To read our love story, and see just how quirky we are, click on the {♥} tab). The cruise was incredible (I probably gained 10 lbs.), and Nassau was unbelievable. I LOVE experiencing culture... and we could not have asked for a better day with the Bahamian people.

. . .

Monday I hit the ground running, trying to catch up on the mass of work I have, as well as making some last decisions to tie up the loose ends of my new branding project. I don't think I've ever been so excited about work in my life. I am waking up bright-eyed and ready at 7:00 every morning--naturally--which is NOT normal, trust me. My heart is just so full of joy that I couldn't go without sharing it with you, my fans and clients. I treasure this season that the Lord has given me... He truly is so good.

Here's a little snapshot into the wonderfulness of what we experienced on our vacation.

Keep on the lookout for the many, many posts to come!

LIFE | BRANDING

For those who have been with me from the beginning, you might have noticed a logo-change... or two, or three.

You see, I have always valued design as an essential element of any brand, whether a product, service, or event. As soon as I decided I was ready to market my work, I knew I needed a design right away. I threw some basics together, and slapped them on my blog to be at least minimally marketable to the clients I sought after. Next, however, I decided that it was a good idea to begin watermarking my images (putting my logo on them) for their online presence. I decided the original logo I came up with wasn't functional for this purpose, and re-designed. Long story short, that logo wasn't legible, the next logo was too boring, and the latest logo looked crazily similar to an already very popular photographer.

Hence, the new branding.

To be completely honest, I wasn't entirely settled with the last branding project. I approached it quickly and with little thought about my personal design taste. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE cursive and flowers and girlyness. However, when I stumble upon a design project that I appreciate, it is (99% of the time) minimalistic, classic, and crisp. I love good, clean design.

. . .

In short, thank you to everyone who has encouraged my creativity along the way! I have had a BLAST discovering my "business personality", and could not be more ecstatic about the end result. I will have new business cards, packaging, and [obviously] online branding. I'll be sure to post pictures when I receive the fabulous business cards from Moo, as well as when I get ready to ship off my first completed package design.

. . .

Have a great day, everyone!

Creative Session | Rachel Shepherd

I was in show choir with Rachel. Show choir. I chuckle every time I think about my show choir days. Not that I didn't love it, I did. But the visual replay of awkward high school students singing and dancing to remixed show-tunes is quite humorous. GLEE didn't exist then. It might be a more popular idea now. :)

Anyway, you know how you kind of facebook "stalk" your former high-school mates? Guilty. I also ran into Rachel several times in the past couple of years, and was so enthralled by her coolness. Really. I finally mustered up the courage to ask her to do a Creative Session. (Yep, I randomly INVITE my clients to do a session. If you think you have a unique look, wardrobe, photo session idea--send it my way, and I may just select you for my next creative project!)

Rachel showed up, and I have to admit I was awkwardly excited about the session (happens all the time). Really, I just LOVE people. And Rachel is BEAUTIFUL, I just knew I was going to love the outcome of this session.

Enough talking, now. Enjoy, friends.
